Community Immersion

Jansen Site, Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City. 6000 Cebu

About the Sitio

Upon observing their sitio, We observed that their community was overpopulated for such a small place. We also inquire as to whether their location has changed significantly over the years, as stated by the responders, there are numerous changes. There are pros and cons that changed the community. People there do not have access to proper jobs and due to that they cannot sustain living or provide for their families, so due the desperate times they begin to participate in selling drugs which led to people there using drugs. Furthermore, their situation has normalized the using and selling of drugs so much to the point that they do not bother hiding it. The school was one of the benefits of the community's changes because these helped with the kids' education. Finally, one of the changes that the people are proud of and honor is the church, since it greatly benefited them to exalt Jesus in the church.

But she also mentioned that she was 18 when she stayed here in Cebu for college and stayed in the province of Aloguinsan. But when she got married to her husband in the 1980s who is from that community, she lived with him.

When we asked if there had been any changes in their community, she replied that there had not been a shrine there previously; however, one had been built, and it was the St. Arnold Janssen shrine, where the immersion took place.

Additionally, we also asked about the struggles they were facing and she mentioned that they were a lot of them. These include covid-19, earthquakes, and typhoons. She said some were given attention and some were not given enough attention from the government.

She hoped that the flow of the government would be better. That it would be peaceful, and that drugs should not be tolerated.

We can correlate Ms. Valeriano’s experience with the subjects we are tackling in Philosophy, for example, Micro theoretical perspective, even though she knows she cannot change the society she lives in as a whole so she focuses on herself to be different from the people residing in her area and decides to not follow them and take her own route leading to God.

relating to philosophy

In conclusion, Mrs. Valeriano’s story reflects key philosophical themes. She knows she can’t change everyone around her, so she focuses on being different herself. By going her own way and not following what others do, especially when it comes to drugs, she shows how society can affect individuals. This makes us think about finding a balance between fitting in and making our own choices. Mrs. Valeriano’s journey reminds us that it is important to understand how individuals and societies interact.
